Crispy Tempura vegetables

Crispy Tempura vegetables

Tempura is the Japanese name for battered, fried tidbits and is the quintessential eastern deep-fried dish.

Let’s be precise about tempura for a minute. It’s crispy, it’s fried, AND it’s no longer yet another potato dish. That’s an automatic win for me. Plus, the undeniable fact that it’s greens has me satisfied that it’s healthy. the key to making anything else deep-fried crispy is the use of tremendous-bloodless materials. This contains the batter, vegetables, and even the bowl. This recipe is extremely good with vegetables similar to asparagus, zucchini, onion wedges, pink bell pepper wedges, mushrooms, eggplant, butternut squash, parsnip, spinach leaves, green beans, bananas, and even bird or fish.

Tempura tips

1. tremendous Duper Crispy: Dip the vegetable in the batter, fry it for 20 seconds. Dip it into the batter once more, and fry for roughly 1 greater minute. Cuz two is all the time greater than one when it comes to fried goodness.

2. hold It Crisp: It’s critical to vicinity the just-fried vegetables on a wire rack instead of on a paper-lined plate. The rack makes it possible for air to circulate and hold the coating crisp.

3. super Ice bloodless Batter: I blended ice cubes at once into the batter. It’s crucial to hold the batter cold because the drastic alternate in temperature that occurs in case you drop it in the hot oil causes it to crisp up more advantageous.

four. sizzling Oil: as a way to stay away from soggy, grease-logged tempura, make sure your fry oil reaches 360°F to 375°F, or that a drop of batter instantly sizzles and rises to the floor. the simplest fry with oils which have a high smoke element (these are oils that aren’t as prone to burning). Most commonly this is canola oil, however for taste and fitness purposes, I'd additionally use grape seed or sunflower oil.

look at examines results of vitamin C doses on duration of usual bloodless

the connection between nutrition C dosage and its results on the duration of the commonplace cold symptoms may lengthen to six-eight grams per day in line with a statistical analysis posted in nutrients.

Dozens of animal reports using diverse animal species have discovered that vitamin C vastly prevents and alleviates infections caused by way of the different microorganism, viruses, and protozoa. Given the frequent nature of the impact of diet C towards quite a few infections in diverse animal species, it also looks evident that diet C influences the susceptibility to, and the severity of infections in humans. however, the useful value of diet C in human infections is not widely used.

The standard cold is essentially the most noticeably studied an infection concerning the consequences of diet C. the majority of controlled trials have used a modest dosage of simplest 1 g per day of diet C. The pooled impact of all published studies has shown a statistically extremely enormous difference between the diet C and placebo organizations, which shows a real biological effect. although, the surest doses and the maximal effects of vitamin C on the commonplace bloodless are unknown. the rigors that used doses higher than 1 g per day usually discovered enhanced results than trials with exactly 1 g per day, which means a dose stylish effect. having said that, definitive conclusions can't be made from any such assessment on account of a large number of confounding adjustments between the rigors. the most legitimate examination of dose-response is for this reason within a single trial that has randomly chosen trial agencies with distinct nutrition C doses so that exposure to viruses is similar and the outcomes definition is identical in the examine groups.

Dr. Harri Hemilä from the school of Helsinki, Finland, analyzed the findings of two randomized trials every of which investigated the consequences of two vitamin C doses on the period of the normal cold. the primary trial administered 3 g/day vitamin C to 2 study businesses, 6 g/day to a third community, and the fourth group was administered a placebo. in comparison with the placebo community, the 6 g/day dose shortened colds by way of 17%, twice as much because the three g/day doses did. The second trial administered  4 g/day and eight g/day nutrition C, and placebo to distinct companies, however handiest on the primary day of the cold. compared with the placebo community, the 8 g/day dose shortened colds by 19%, twice as a whole lot as the four g/day dose did. both studies revealed a big dose-response relationship between the nutrition C dosage and the duration of the standard cold. The dose-response relationship in these two trials changed into also reasonably linear as much as the degrees of 6-8 g/day, thus it's feasible that even greater doses may additionally result in still more suitable rate reductions in the duration of average bloodless. Dr. Hemilä notes that there were proposals that nutrition C doses should still be over 15 g/day for the most useful medicine for colds, but the maximum doses that have thus far been investigated in randomized trials were a lot reduce.

Dr. Hemilä concludes that "given the consistent effect of diet C on the length of colds, and its security and within your means, it would be worthwhile for individual average bloodless sufferers to look at various no matter if therapeutic 8 g/day nutrition C is advisable for them. Self-dosing of vitamin C ought to be all started as quickly as possible after the onset of standard cold signs to be most positive." Dr. Hemilä additionally states that extra therapeutic trials may still be conducted to examine the dose-response relation in the place of over 8 g/day of vitamin C.

excessive doses of diet C can help treat cancer, scientists locate

high doses of vitamin C injected into the blood movement might support treat cancer, new research from scientists suggests.

Injecting sufferers with a dose 1,000 instances higher than the advised stage might target tumor cells and make radiation and chemotherapy more constructive.

Scientists gave eleven mind cancer sufferers commonplace dosages of nutrition C a week for nine months while receiving typical radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

exams confirmed the extra nutrition – continually found in oranges, eco-friendly greens, broccoli, and strawberries – made cancer cells greater prone to medication.

It also seemed to be secure, producing mild facet results reminiscent of time-honored bathroom journeys and a dry mouth.

The analysis, posted within the journal melanoma cellphone, confirmed that iron within the tumors reacted with the diet to form harmful “free radical” molecules which selectively caused handiest cancerous cells to die.

The safeguard looks at units the stage for greater part II trials investigating even if excessive-dose diet C injections can lengthen the lifespan of cancer sufferers.

US researcher Dr. Garry Buettner, from the institution of Iowa, mentioned: "This paper reveals a metabolic frailty in melanoma cells that's in line with their own construction of oxidizing agents that permits us to utilize present redox energetic compounds, like diet C, to sensitize melanoma cells to radiation and chemotherapy."

5 Health Foods That Maybe Making You Sick

5 Health Foods That Maybe Making You Sick

There are many of us who are dieting and trying to live a healthy lifestyle. We exercise and go out of our way to eat the best foods we can. Most of us already know that trans-fats, white sugar, and white flour are not the best health choices, especially if we want to keep our weight down.

Unfortunately, some of the very foods that we think are healthy are ones that can cause a lot of trouble for our bodies, and even make us ill. Below is a list of some surprisingly unhealthy “health foods.”

Artificial Sweeteners

Many people who are dieting, whether it is low calorie or low carb diets, will opt for beverages with artificial sweeteners instead of sugar. Admittedly sugar is certainly a troublemaker and should be avoided, but artificial sweeteners are actually worse for you and could even be dangerous to your health.

All the artificial sweeteners are bad, but one of the worst sweeteners for us is NutraSweet (Equal, aspartame). There are over 92 different health related side effects associated with aspartame consumption, including brain tumors, birth defects, diabetes, emotional disorders and epilepsy/seizures. There are more adverse reactions to NutraSweet reported to the FDA than all other foods and additives combined.

A much better alternative to chemically derived sweeteners is stevia, which comes from a plant. It has been used for centuries with no know side effects. It can be purchased in most health food stores in the United States.

Sports Drinks

Although marketers would have us believe that sports drinks are what the body needs when exercising heavily, the truth is that sports drinks are filled with sugar (sucrose, glucose, and fructose) and salt (potassium and sodium) as well as artificial flavorings and colorings. Add a little salt to Cool-Aid and you have about the same thing. You would be much better off drinking spring water or diluted freshly squeezed juices while exercising.
Most Energy and Sports Bars
Most sports and bars are also filled with things that are not the best for our bodies and are little better than candy bars. Many of them contain sugar or artificial sweeteners, chemicals, preservatives, and synthetic nutrients. Check the ingredients before you buy an energy bar. Try to find one that is made with whole foods, such as oats and flax seeds, fruits, and natural sweeteners.

Soy Products

This is one of the most surprising ones of all after all, soy has been used for countless generations in Asia. But the way we now use soy is very different than the way the Asians have traditionally used it. The ancient Asians knew that the soybean was hard to digest, so they had extensive fermenting processes that broke down most of the indigestible components, making it much healthier to eat. Examples of this would be products like soy sauce, tempeh, and miso. These were used in small amounts as condiments and flavorings, not as a meat replacement.
But the way we use soy as a meat alternative (texturized vegetable protein or TVP) can be very unhealthy since soy contains large amounts of toxins or anti-nutrients. Some of the problems the anti-nutrients in soybeans cause are conditions of the pancreas, cancer and thyroid problems. Soybeans also can block the body’s absorption of essential minerals.

Granola (and Other Unprepared Grains)

For the last 30-40 years, granola has been synonymous with heath food. But eating unprepared grains, or grains that have not been soaked, fermented or sprouted, has only come about in the last 50-100 years. People who lived before our time understood that unprepared grains could cause dietary distress.
There are anti-nutrients in grains (like there are in soybeans), such as phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors, that make them harder to digest. These antinutrients can cause serious problems like Crohn's disease, colitis, and even mental disorders. Our failure to prepare our grains properly is one of the reasons that elastic disease is so prevalent now.
So, stay away from the granola. Oatmeal is an excellent addition to our diets, but use whole rolled oats (not instant) and soak them overnight before boiling them for breakfast. Go to our recipe blog at http://coconut-recipes.blogspot.com for a good recipe for coconut oatmeal.

Good bread to eat are those that have properly prepared grains, including whole grain sourdough and sprouted grain pieces of bread. You can usually find these in specialty grocery stores and health food stores.
If you are trying to lose weight and/or eat healthier, remember that just because a company markets a “healthy” product well or a health food store sells it, it doesn’t mean that it is really healthy for you. Do some research before you grab that sports bar, or better yet, reach for an organic apple, cherries, or some other natural (not processed) food. Your body will thank you and reward you for it.

10 Steps For Cooking Up Family Memories

10 Steps For Cooking Up Family Memories

The kitchen is the perfect place for making memories. When you spend time baking, cooking and enjoying meals with your family, you create happy memories you and your children will cherish forever.

The benefits of preparing and enjoying food as a family are clear. You save money and eat healthier meals. You create opportunities to connect and communicate with your children and spouse. And most importantly, you show love for your family when you spend time cooking and eating with them. Children of all ages need your attention and your time. By working together to create a meal or bake a batch of cookies, you spend valuable time together.

So, here are 10 steps to get your family cooking up memories.

Step 1:

Teach small children the fun of cooking by helping them bake cookies and cakes. If you are short on time, you can use a boxed cookie mix and spend more time decorating.

Step 2:

Encourage the littlest ones to play pretend cooking. Kids love to play with real mixing bowls, strainers and wooden spoons. These make harmless toys and can be easily thrown in the dishwasher for quick cleanup.

Step 3:

If you live by your day-timer, schedule in baking cookies with your kids. Our schedules can be so hectic that something as simple as baking a batch of chocolate chip cookies can get skipped over. Write it down and do it.

Step 4:

If you have teenagers, let them play their favorite music while they wash the lettuce and set the table.

Step 5:

Work together with your spouse to prepare the dinner and use the time to catch up on each other's day.

Step 6:

Even if you are in a rush preparing dinner, remember to reduce your stress and focus on creating a fun atmosphere that naturally encourages the whole family to participate.

Step 7:

When spending time preparing food with your children, include lessons about healthy eating choices. Keep the conversation positive and avoid listing foods they can't have.

Step 8:

On days where you anticipate time will be tight, consider taking a short cut by using a frozen stir-fry mix or pasta with a jar of pre-made sauce. Your family will appreciate your relaxed mood much more than a made-from-scratch dinner.

Step 9:

Share the job of grocery shopping. One week have mom take one of the children as a helper, the next week dad can go with another child. Always work from a grocery list and let your children help you retrieve items and cross them off the list.

Step 10:

Have big family meals where you share about your day. Keep the conversation fun and avoid negative lectures over dinner. Remember to laugh.

Take these steps today and make your kitchen a fun and memorable place for your whole family.

Efficient Cookie Baking For Busy Cooks

Efficient Cookie Baking For Busy Cooks

Efficient Cookie Baking For Busy Cooks

Over the years, I’ve come up with many ways to make the process of baking a large variety of cookies go much smoother and take less time out of my busy life.

In addition to the 6-step method, I’ve found an efficient way to prepare a large variety of cookie dough with minimum fuss by setting up a cookie assembly line. The best part of this process is that you can make 12 different batches of cookies and only have to wash the dishes once! This process assumes that you have already chosen your recipes and gone grocery shopping. You will want to use your longest available expanse of countertop for this. My assembly line turns two corners as it winds around my small kitchen, but that is fine.
You may need to make some adjustments depending on your individual recipes, but for most recipes, you can set up your assembly line like so:

Flour Line:

Large mixing bowl
Measuring cups and spoons
Fork for stirring
Flour
Baking powder and baking soda
Salt
Cocoa powder
Spices
Any other dry ingredients that are added to the flour in your recipes

Butter Line

Another large mixing bowl (or the bowl of your stand mixer)
A second set of measuring cups and spoons
Electric mixer
Wooden spoon
Rubber spatula
Butter, shortening, margarine and/or cream cheese
Sugar (white and brown)
Eggs
Vanilla and other extracts
Chunks such as raisins, nuts, chocolate chips
Rolled oats
Any other ingredients that are added to the butter and eggs in your recipes
Plastic wrap
Felt-tip marker

To avoid transferring flavors from one recipe to another, you will start with basic recipes that have no spices, chocolate, or other strongly flavored ingredients. Starting with your first recipe, go down the line measuring out the amount of flour, baking powder/soda, and salt into one bowl. Then, combine the butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla in your larger bowl as directed. Gradually stir the flour mixture into the butter mixture. After that, stir in any chunks.

Next, scrape down the edges of the mixing bowl so that it’s fairly clean, shape the dough into a ball, and wrap it in plastic wrap. Identify the recipe by writing its name on the plastic wrap with a felt-tip marker, and refrigerate it. If it is a slice-and-bake refrigerator cookie, form it into a log instead of a ball, according to the directions in your recipe. If you plan to bake much later, you can even freeze the dough. Most cookie doughs freeze very well. Defrost at room temperature while still wrapped in plastic wrap, and unwrap only when the dough is thoroughly defrosted. Otherwise, condensation could add too much moisture to your dough.

When your first batch of dough is prepared, wrapped, and stored in the refrigerator or freezer, return to the beginning of your assembly line, without washing your dishes, and begin preparing the next batch of dough. When you have prepared all the recipes that contain no spices or cocoa, move on to the recipes that contain cocoa, and finally those that contain spices. This way, you will only have to do dishes once at the end of the process, and you will have several different kinds of dough waiting to be baked.

When all your dough is prepared, then you can finally put away all your ingredients, clean up the kitchen, and do your dishes. Now if you plan to finish your baking today, you’ll have lots of space for rolling out your dough or setting out your cooling racks. If you plan to bake another day, you’re done!

The Dr.Phil Diet Explained

The Ultimate Weight Solution: Seven Keys to Weight Loss Freedom"

Dr. Phil McGraw  book

Dr. Phil McGraw once published a book entitled "The Ultimate Weight Solution: Seven Keys to Weight Loss Freedom" in which he introduced the world to his new diet, the "Shape Up Plan". This popular diet (allegedly top 10 in the USA) is based on 7 main foundations, namely:-

Right thinking for self control
Healing feelings as the key to emotional control
No fail environment
Mastery over food and impulse eating
High-response cost / high-yield nutrition
Intentional exercise
The circle of support

Dr Phil is a realist - he reminds us that dieting is never easy. but then again, nothing worth having ever is! The Shape Up Plan is a balanced approach to weight control. You will essentially be eating high fiber foods such as complex carbohydrates, whole grains, fruits and vegetables plus lean protein and "good" fats.

Dr Phil explains that you need to focus on eating only "high-response-cost, high-yield foods." - a perfect example would be sunflower seeds - your body needs to do a lot of work to process these kinds of food before the calories in them actually become available to you. This is in direct contrast to "low-response-cost, low-yield foods" like burgers or tacos which are easy to eat and digest. Dr Phil believes that the extra steps the body needs to take to process these good foods mean that they are leass likely to be converted to fat. Unlike some diets, you can eat most things in moderation. This is because Dr Phil believes restrictive diets don't work - banned food make dieters unhappy, and they tend to become obsessive about them leading to sudden binges, and dropping of the diet. Instead, Dr Phil recommends  you watch portion sizes, eat mostly foods that are high in nutrients and fiber, stay away from salts and fats, and choose foods that involve some work when eaten (such as broccoli, peanuts and fish).

Food to avoid include avoid fast food, and any easily consumed food - the phrase he likes is to avoid eating anything that will turn you into a human "wood chipper." For this reason, you shouldn't buy cookies and potato chips. Instead you should stock up on vegetables and other healthy foods bought from a list. A full list of good and bad foods is available at ww.supadiet.com.'Like a lot of sensible diets, the Shape Up Plan incorporates exercise. Dr Phil suggests the standard 3 times per week, for at least 20 minutes a time. Following the Doctor's recommendations can lead to weightloss of between one and two pounds per week - slow steady loss, of course, being easier to maintain than loss acheived via 'crash diets'. Once you hit the target weight you want, the rules slacken considerably, although you still need to remember the 7 keys to success, and base your eating habits on them.

Design Tips For A Great Kids Birthday Cake

Design Tips For A Great Kids Birthday Cake

These days, you can probably buy just about any style of child’s birthday cake already made. But there is nothing like the sense of satisfaction from making that special cake just for your child – after all, they have each birthday only once!

There’s also the benefit of being able to control what ingredients are actually used in making the cake. Apart from producing a healthier cake, you can also cater for any allergies that your child or his/her friends may have.

Once you have decided to make the cake yourself, here are some tips to help you:
1. Don’t worry if you failed Art 101 dismally. Remember that kids don’t expect you to turn out a design worthy of da Vinci. Often they are more interested in the number (and color) of pieces of candy on top of the cake than the actual design itself.

2. In selecting a design for the cake, there are two main options: a specific design (such as a favorite character from a TV program), or a more generic theme (such as a train or an animal).
Whichever you choose, remember that it will be much easier if you only cut the cake to the basic shape you want, and use the icing to create the detail of the design. Trying to make the Eiffel Tower out of cut pieces of sponge cake is a definite no-no!

3. The actual cake recipe should be kept simple, such as a basic sponge cake. Remember, the icing and candy decorations will give the cake plenty of flavor, and a plain cake recipe will appeal to a wider range of kids’ tastes.

4. Be especially careful to cater for any allergies. Even if you are not aware of any allergies amongst the party attendees, it is best to avoid using any products containing nuts. Read the packages of the cake ingredients carefully.

5. It is best to make the cake the day before the party. Apart from making the day of the party less stressful, you will find that the cake will be easier to cut. If the cake is too fresh, crumbs tend to stick to the icing and can make the cut pieces look pretty messy.

6. When choosing the icing, think about how messy it will be to eat – your friends won’t be too pleased with you if their kids end up with permanently-stained clothes from your brightly-colored strawberry icing!

7. When actually making the icing, you may have to tweak the recipe to allow for the weather. For hot climates, you may have to add more icing powder/sugar to thicken it up; for cold days, you don’t want the icing to set as hard as rock.

8. If you are going to use an icing decorating bag and tips to draw your design on the cake, have a practice first on a plate. You’ll surprise yourself with what you can do!

9. If you are totally artistically challenged, there are many companies who supply ready-made decorations that you can use on the cake. You can even buy a lot of these over the internet, and you can find a list of some major suppliers at www.cakemagician.com/suppliers.htm.

Finally, remember to HAVE FUN when you make the cake! It may seem quite a lot of effort, but the happy smile on your child’s face when they see the cake will reward you immensely.
